AWS re:invent 2018 — Day 3 refelections
Yesterday’s Benelux drinks were a great success, so my day started a little bit later then usual ;)
My first talk of today was titled “AWS I Choose You: Pokemon’s Battle against the bots”. Two engineers from The Pokemon company discussed what they did to battle bots.
At first they started out with CloudFront serverless analytics to analyse edge traffic, query it and adjust the WAF, but this process was manual and thus error prone. So, they built a new system consisting of Kynesis, Lambda functions, DynamoDB, SQS that automatically adds ip addresses of bots that cause a lot of hits to a WAF blacklist and takes them off after a certain time.
Given the scale of the Pokemon GO platform, they had interesting challenges and had to really tweak the system.
The rest of the day is spent talking to vendors and visiting other companies in The Quad and area filled up with companies, startups and students that use AWS in cool ways as well as some fun activities.
